Gesshō studied painting under Gessen Tanke and Goshun Matsumura who was the founder of the shijō school of Japanese painting. The shijō school followed Ōkyo Maruyama’s lead and drew objects in a more realistic way than did traditional Asian artists. Twelve of Gesshō’s bird or flower-and-bird paintings are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Gesshō also published some of his art in picture books.
